Laptop Lending

The Kellogg, MacRae, and Sexton Libraries all have laptops that may be borrowed for short periods of time. Laptop lending is not available at the Killam or Dunn locations.
Use of library laptops is governed by the Dalhousie IT Resources acceptable use policy.

Number available: 8 (5 Windows, 3 Mac)

Eligibility

  • Currently registered Dalhousie students with valid DalCard whose library record is in good standing (no outstanding fines $10.00 or over).

Borrowing

  • Laptops may be borrowed at the Service Point of the CHEB Learning Commons.
  • All borrowers must sign a Laptop Loan Registration Agreement.
  • Maximum loan period for a laptop is three hours.
  • Laptops can be taken outside the library.

Returns

  • Return laptops to the staff at the Service Point at the end of the three hours or 30 minutes prior to library closing - whichever comes first.

Renewals

  • If there is no one waiting for a laptop you may renew in person at the CHEB Learning Commons Service Point Desk. Phone and online renewals are NOT available.

Late fees

  • A late fine of $20.00 per hour will be charged to a maximum of $200.00. Laptops not returned by close of the following day will be considered lost and you will be charged a replacement fee of $1500 (PC), $1800.00 (Mac).

Reservations

  • Advance bookings/holds for laptops will not be accepted. Laptop loans are on a first come, first served basis.

Theft, damage, loss

  • You are responsible for theft, damage or loss of the laptop.
  • You are financially responsible for the laptop and accessories while signed out in your name, as agreed to when you signed the Laptop Loan Registration Agreement.
  • In the case of damage or loss, you will be charged up to $1800.00 for repair or replacement.
  • Component replacement fees: Power supply $125.00, Lock $45.00, Case $50.00 Mouse $15.00.

Saving your work

  • You cannot save personal software or any documents on the laptop.
  • Save your documents on a USB key, your G: DRIVE or email them to yourself.
  • When the laptop is shut-down all files are erased. There is no way to recover your work once the laptop is shut down/restarted.
  • The library is not responsible for the loss or damage to any of your files.

Internet connections

  • The Internet is accessible from the laptop
  • Each laptop case comes with an instruction sheet for connecting to the wireless network and accessing your G: drive.
  • Instructions are also on the desktop of each laptop.
  • If you have problems, help is provided by the Service Point staff.

Printing

  • Print jobs are sent to the Print Release Stations in the Learning Commons by default.

Operating system

  • We offer laptops with both Windows 7 Professional and Macintosh OS. They have the same software as Kellogg Library Learning Commons computers, such as Microsoft Office Suite, and some statistical packages.

Accessories

  • Each laptop comes with a power cord, power supply, mouse, lock and carrying case.

  • Plugging in: There are electrical outlets throughout the library. Please do not unplug library equipment to plug in the laptop.
  • Battery: Check the battery level by clicking on the battery icon (bottom right of the screen) which indicates the remaining battery life. Battery life is limited and we recommend plugging the laptop into an electrical outlet.

Help

  • We expect you to be familiar with the hardware and software. The Information and Circulation Desks are available to help troubleshoot with problems you may encounter. Some issues may have to be referred to our Systems staff.

  • Only Faculty of Agriculture students, faculty or staff may sign out a laptop. A valid Faculty of Agriculture student or Dal ID must be presented when signing out the equipment.
  • To sign out a laptop your library account must be in good standing, i.e. no outstanding fines $10.00 or over.

Borrowing

  • Laptops may be borrowed at the Service Point of the MacRae Library.
  • In order to use a laptop, all borrowers must sign a Laptop Loan Agreement. This agreement must be signed once per academic year.
  • Maximum loan period for a laptop is two hours.
  • Laptops cannot be taken outside the library.
  • Laptops do not circulate overnight.

Returns

  • Return laptops at the Circulation Desk at the end of the two hour loan period or 30 minutes prior to library closing - whichever comes first.
  • Laptops are to be returned to the staff at the Circulation Desk in the Library. Do not drop the laptops into the return bin or leave them on the counter. You should be prepared to wait a few minutes while the staff verifies that all items have been returned in good condition.

Renewals

  • Laptops can be renewed once as long as no other eligible library patron is waiting to borrow one. Renewals must be done in person at the Service Point Desk.

Late fees

  • A late fine of $5.00 per hour to a maximum of $50.00 will be charged on all laptops.
  • Laptops not returned before the Circulation Desk closes will be presumed to be stolen or lost. Replacement charges of $2,000 will be applied and fines of $5.00 per hour will also be charged

Reservations

  • Advance bookings/holds for laptops will not be accepted. Laptop loans are on a first come, first served basis. There may be times, however, when the laptop has been booked by Library staff for teaching purposes. You will be notified of any pre-bookings at the time of checkout.

Theft, damage, loss

  • You are responsible for theft, damage or loss of the laptop during your loan period.
  • You are financially responsible for the laptop and accessories while signed out in your name, as agreed to when you signed the Laptop Loan Registration Agreement.
  • Laptops not returned before the Service Desk closes will be presumed to be stolen or lost. A $2,000 replacement charge will be applied and fines of $5.00 per hour will also be charged.

Saving your work

  • It is highly recommended that all documents be saved on removable media (CD or USB) or emailed to yourself.
  • While you can temporarily save data to the laptop, all saved data and settings are erased permanently when the laptop loses power, is restarted or shut down. Data stored on the desktop or C: drive is automatically erased upon return of the laptop to the Service Desk. There is no way to recover your work once the laptop is shut down/restarted  
  • The library assumes no responsibility for the loss of, or damage to, any files placed on or used on the laptop.

Internet connections

  • The Internet is accessible from the laptop and each computer is equipped with wireless network cards.
  • To connect to the campus wireless network you must login to the wireless network with your Network ID and password.

Printing

  • Printing is not available from the MacRae Library laptops.

Operating system

  • All laptops have Windows 7 operating systems installed. Also included are Microsoft Office, and other standard applications for Windows systems.

Accessories

  • The laptop will come in a carrying case with a power cord. The Student Services laptop also has headphones. There is no mouse provided.

  • If there is no one waiting for the laptop you may renew in person at the Sexton Service Desk. Phone renewals and online renewals are NOT available.

Late fees

  • A late fine of $10.00 per hour will be charged up to a maximum of $200.00. If the laptop is not returned by close of the following day, it will be considered lost and you will be charged a replacement fee of $1000.
