Dalhousie library’s state-of-the-art workspaces

Learning Commons combine information resources with the latest technology to provide students, faculty and staff a quality space to work in.

Locations

Each library has a Learning Commons. Find the one nearest you.

PC workstations and software

There are 3 main types of PC workstations available using the Microsoft Windows 7 Professional operating system:

Express

  • Available for public use.
  • Internet access to allow searching of the Novanet catalogue and library databases.
  • Available in all Learning Commons locations.

Scholar

  • Accessible only to current Dalhousie students, staff and faculty members.
  • Variety of software, including: Microsoft Office 2013, SPSS, SAS, Maple, ArcGIS, Matlab and Minitab.
  • Available in all Learning Commons locations.

Multimedia

  • Accessible only to current Dalhousie students, staff and faculty members.
  • Variety of software, including: Microsoft Office 2013, SPSS, SAS, Maple, ArcGIS, Matlab and Minitab.
  • Adobe Creative Suite 6 is installed as well as a flatbed scanner at each machine.
  • Only available at the Killam Learning Commons.

Apple workstations and software

Apple iMac workstations are available using the Mountain Lion operating system.

  • Accessible only to current Dalhousie students, staff and faculty members.
  • Variety of software, including: Mac Office 2011, iWorks, SPSS and Maple.
  • Available at the Killam and Law Learning Commons only.

Printing

Black and white printers are available in all Learning Commons locations. Colour printing is available at the Kellogg and Killam Learning Commons.

Large Format Printing

The Killam Learning Commons has a HP Designjet T2300 large format printer which can print maps and posters up to 36 inches wide. Two types of paper are available. Matte paper is priced at $9 per linear foot, satin paper is $10 per linear foot.

  • Submit jobs, or questions, to plotter@dal.ca. Large files should be submitted via Dalhousie File Exchange.
  • Files should be sized correctly and in pdf format only.
  • When submitting specify whether you require matte or satin paper and also the expected size of your print job.
  • The printer is in operation Monday to Friday.
  • Turnaround time should be within 24 hours, except at weekends.
  • You will be notified by email when the print job is ready.

Scanning

Book scanners and flat-bed scanners are available at all Learning Commons locations.
