GIS Technology

Technology available in the GISciences Centre

Workstations

All 160 computers in the Killam Library Learning Commons are equipped with ArcGIS Desktop software. Five of these workstations are designated for GIS. If none are available and you notice that someone is not using the station specifically for GIS-related work, you may ask them to move to another available station not designated for GIS.

The ArcGIS Desktop software is also available in a number of labs across campus. Contact your lab administrator or the GIS Centre for information and installation.

Scanners

Scanners are available for use in the Learning Commons. Please note, at this time the Centre does not have access to digitizers or large-format scanners or copiers.

Printers/Plotters

Letter and legal-sized prints are available both in black and white and colour. We now have an HP DesignJet 1055cm Plus plotter, capable of plots up to 36 inches in width. Contact us for information on print fees.

Software

Dalhousie has license agreements with a number of GIS and Image Processing softwares.  For questions relating to installation contact the GISciences Centre.  The following software packages are available on the GIS workstations in the Learning Commons and/or in the Centre's office:
  • ArcGIS10  Desktop (including extensions)
  • Idrisi

ArcGIS10 software can be downloaded by faculty, staff and students for educational puposes.  The software can be downloaded from the Dalhousie website at http://its.dal.ca/services/computer_services/downloads/arcgistest.html .  If you are using this at home you need to be connected to Dalhousie through VPN.
