Services for Online Courses

Applying library tools in OWL

OWL (Online Web Learning) is Dalhousie’s online course content manager. Dalhousie libraries offer tools faculty can incorporate into their OWL pages to customize library services to each course you teach.

Subject Guides widgets

  • Subject Guides are created by subject librarians. They highlight the important resources for particular programs.
  • This widget inserts onto your course page a direct link to the appropriate subject guide for the course and a Novanet search box.
  • Contact your subject librarian for more information or go to the Faculty Resources Common in Blackboard and click on Special Downloads > Library Subject Guides.

Create an online reading list

You can use the Libraries' e-reserve service to upload your reading lists, or create your own.

To create your own list of journal articles for your course page, it’s important that you list links that will last and always be reliably accessible for your students.

  • Read our Help sheet on how to create a durable link or persistent URL for online reading lists, including journal articles and e-books
  • View our LibCast on creating a persistent URL

Insert reading lists into OWL

  • Log in to course
  • Navigate to section of course
  • Add Content Link > Learning Module
  • Create Learning Module > choose title > Save
  • Click on LM icon > Add File
  • Browse for file and select
  • Mark the file (right click to preview)
  • Use Student view to check display

RefWorks

  • Important tool for managing research and creating accurate bibliographies
  • Students can create account and import citations
  • Can share references with students
  • In RefWorks choose Share folder > URL
  • In OWL, create Content Link > Learning Module > Add Content Link >Web Link

To embed LibCasts, tutorials, guides:
