Requesting Materials

Make a request to Distance Services

Once registered with Dalhousie libraries, distance services delivers items to you from our collections and facilitates deliveries from other libraries across Canada. There are several options for acquiring library materials as a distance user:

Novanet Express

Use Novanet Express for delivery of materials listed in Novanet if you are in Nova Scotia near a Novanet library (see list). If the item is held at a:

• Nearby Novanet library: sign it out in person using Dalhousie ID card
• At a distant Novanet library: Order through Novanet Express or the Document Delivery request form linked from WorldCat. You pick up materials from the Novanet library nearest you.

Borrowing from a nearby Canadian university library:

Borrow directly using your Dalhousie ID card and your ASIN card.

Document Delivery Service form

Use the Atlantic Scholarly Information Network (ASIN) document delivery form if you are:

In Canada, not near a Novanet library for:

• items not found or listed in WorldCat
• items not held by a Novanet library
• items not held by a Canadian university library near you

Outside Canada:

• Articles from journals listed in Novanet
• Articles from journals in WoldCat
• Items held by Dalhousie (see next section Delivery of Material)
  

Delivery of material

• Items are delivered directly to you: articles electronically, loans via courier.
• Restrictions outside Canada: Due to location, available delivery options or excessive cost, delivery of Dalhousie books may not be possible.
  
• Delivery of non-Dalhousie books is not possible outside Canada.

Returning material

Dalhousie Libraries deliver material at no charge to our distance users, but we do not cover the cost of returning an item.

• You are responsible for returning materials by the due date.
  
• Use the return address label provided for you.
  
• Do not remove the blue document delivery wrapper around an item. 

Renewals

Novanet loans:

• Renewable three times if no one else is waiting to use them.
  
• Login to your Novanet library account to renew Novanet items.

Document Delivery

• Document delivery loans last for three weeks with no renewal
• Loan periods and renewal options vary.
  
• Blue wrapper around the item indicates the due date and renewal options.
  
• Request a document delivery renewal: contact the department via email or phone 902-494-3612. 

Fees and fines

There are no fees for any Dalhousie Library distance services. However, fines will accrue on overdue items. Outstanding fines for late returns appear on your monthly statement from the Dalhousie Libraries.
