Laptop Lending
Borrow a laptop to work on from the Kellogg Library
The W.K. Kellogg Health Sciences Library keeps five laptop computers you may borrow for short periods of time to work on while you are in the library. Here are the loan guidelines:
Eligibility
- Currently registered Dalhousie students with valid DalCard whose library record is in good standing.
Borrowing
- Laptops may be borrowed at the Circulation Desk of the Kellogg Health Sciences Library.
- All borrowers must sign a Laptop Loan Registration Agreement.
- Maximum loan period for a laptop is three hours.
- Laptops can be taken outside the library
Returns
- Return laptops to the staff at the Circulation Desk at the end of the three hours or 30 minutes prior to library closing - whichever comes first.
Renewals
- If there is no one waiting for a laptop you may renew in person or by phone at the Kellogg Library Circulation Desk. Online renewals are NOT available.
Late fees
- A late fine of $20.00 per hour will be charged on all laptops up to a maximum of $200.00. Laptops not returned by close of the following day, will be considered lost and you will be charged a replacement fee of $1500.00.
Reservations
- Advance bookings/holds for laptops will not be accepted. Laptop loans are on a first come, first served basis.
Theft, damage, loss
- You are responsible for theft, damage or loss of the laptop.
- You are financially responsible for the laptop and accessories while signed out in your name, as agreed to when you signed the Laptop Loan Registration Agreement.
- In the case of damage or loss, you will be charged up to $1500.00 for repair or replacement.
- Component replacement fees: Power supply $125.00, Lock $45.00, Case $50.00 Mouse $15.00.
Saving your work
- You cannot save personal software or any documents on the laptop.
- Save your documents on a USB key, your G: DRIVE or email them to yourself.
- When the laptop is shut-down all files are erased. There is no way to recover your work once the laptop is shut down/restarted.
- The library is not responsible for the loss or damage to any of your files.
Internet connections
- The Internet is accessible from the laptop
- Each laptop case comes with an instruction sheet for connecting to the wireless network and accessing your G: drive.
- Instructions are also on the desktop of each laptop.
- If you have problems, help is provided by the Circulation Desk or Information Desk staff.
Printing
- Print jobs are sent to the Print Release Stations in the Learning Commons by default.
Operating system
- We offer laptops with both Windows XP and Macintosh OS. They have the same software as Kellogg Library Learning Commons computers, such as Microsoft Office Suite, and some statistical packages.
Accessories
- Each laptop comes with a power cord, power supply, mouse, lock and carrying case.
Power
- Plugging in: There are electrical outlets throughout the library. Please do not unplug library equipment to plug in the laptop.
- Battery: Check the battery level by clicking on the battery icon (bottom right of the screen) which indicates the remaining battery life. Battery life is limited and we recommend plugging the laptop into an electrical outlet.
Help
- We expect you to be familiar with the hardware and software. The Information and Circulation Desks are available to help troubleshoot with problems you may encounter. Some issues may have to be referred to our Systems staff.
