Reference Collections

Subject-relevant reference materials in every location

Start at the reference desk

Every library at Dalhousie has a staffed reference desk with key subject-relevant printed reference materials nearby.

Killam Memorial Library

Reference materials (REFDESK) are located on the shelves next to the reference desk. The Killam also has designated rooms for print reference materials:

J.J. Stewart Room

The J.J. Stewart Room of the Learning Commons South, on the main floor of the Killam Library, houses most of the library’s print reference books (REF) in the Sciences, Social Sciences, Humanities and Business/Management.

Bennet Room

Print indexes and government document indexes (REF INDEX; DOCREF) are in the Bennet Room, in the North Learning Commons on the main floor of the Killam library. Microforms are also kept here.

Music Collection

A small reference collection of thematic and repertoire catalogues is maintained in the Music Collection on the 5th floor.

Archives and Special Collections

The Archives and Special Collections maintains a reference collection of university archival records, including:

  • Yearbooks
  • Calendars and convocation programs
  • Dalhousie Gazette
  • Photographs
  • University reports and other records that document the history of the university.

Most of the major archival collection areas (e.g., theatre, shipping history) also have reference collections of primary sources.
