Map Collection Room

Facilities, workspaces and equipment in the Map Collection Room

Dalhousie faculty, students, staff and the general public are welcome to come work and use the facilities in the Map Collection Room.

Workspace

The map collection has several large tables reserved for people to work with maps and other cartographic materials.

Light tables

Our light table is a drafting-sized table lit from below enabling you to accurately trace maps.

Scanners

Our scanning equipment can accommodate scans up to 8.5 x 14".

Photocopiers

Currently the map collection room does not have a large-format photocopier. Visitors may photocopy sections of maps using the photocopiers provided by the Killam Library. The charge for photocopying using a DalCard is $0.12 per page. The charge for using the coin operated photocopiers is $0.15 per page. Map collection staff can assist you in creating black and white photocopies.

There are strict rules regarding photocopying and scanning as defined in the Copyright Act. Please consult the Copyright Office Website or ask the map collection staff for details.

Internet access

One workstation in the map collection room is designated for online research associated with maps and Geographic Information Systems. Map collection staff can perform online searches for visitors to answer reference questions, find additional resources or use interactive mapping tools.

Plotter

The Map collection room has a HP Designjet 1055c Plus plotter that can print posters and maps up to 36 inches wide. A variety of paper finishes are available. Cost is dependent on paper type and the poster/map size. For plotting information see our Plotting Services.
