Course eReserves

Please observe the Dalhousie Fair Dealing Guidelines when requesting material to be placed on eReserve.

Use the Online eReserve Materials Submission form to submit a course reading list and have library staff create persistent URLs to as many of the readings as possible. (You will be notified of materials that require alternate formats or copyright clearance.)

Placing Reading Lists with URLs in Brightspace

Instructors can either request that library staff load reading lists into Brightspace, or they can load the reading lists into Brightspace themselves.

If instructors request the library staff to load reading lists, requests will need to be submitted at least 3 weeks prior to the beginning of class. Reading lists are processed by library staff in the order in which they are received

If Instructors choose to load reading lists into Brightspace themselves, they should follow the procedures outlined in the following two sources:

NOTE: Dalhousie Libraries can provide URLs only to these types of electronic material:

  • Licensed Materials: Electronic books and articles available in databases purchased by Dalhousie Libraries, for use by Dalhousie students, faculty, and staff. Persistent, proxied URLs will be provided to this licensed material.

  • Open/Free Web Links: Links to material available for free on the open Web.

  • Electronic material for which copyright clearance has been obtained.

Materials that Require Copyright Clearance

Materials to which the Dalhousie Libraries do not have a license, or own in print, will have copyright clearance sought. When possible, print material will be ordered and scanned. Please note, obtaining copyright clearance may not be feasible in all cases, and instructors may be encouraged to select alternative readings should copyright clearance not be feasible. Links to scanned material will be placed in Brightspace by library staff. Please feel free to send any questions you may have to: copyright.office@dal.ca

Using eBooks as Textbooks

Some publishers limit the number of readers who can use an eBook at the same time. This publisher-controlled limitation can make it difficult for an entire class to use the same eBook. There are also reader limits on eBooks that the Libraries own.

Once you have selected an eBook for your course, please consult with your Subject Liaison to determine that eBook has the required access for your class.

Please note: The Dalhousie Libraries can once again put materials for your class on print reserve provided that your class is being taught completely in person. For online classes or classes that are a combination of online and in-person, reserve materials need to be made available electronically for equity purposes.

Your instructors have placed required reading lists for your specific courses in preparation for your classes in Brightspace.

Brightspace is Dalhousie University’s online course content management system.

If reading lists are posted by the Library, they will be in the Content Section of the Brightspace page. Please follow the Brightspace link to proceed to your course reading lists.

You should consult your instructor if you are having difficulty finding your reading lists.
